Truitt Sponsors Legislation to Extend Family Leave

HARRISBURG-- Rep. Dan Truitt (R-West Chester) has introduced legislation to extend the rights under the Family and Medical Leave Act to cover employees who must care for a sibling, grandparent or grandchild.

“While the Family and Medical Leave Act allows an employee to take unpaid leave to care for a spouse, child or parent, it fails to address the problem of family members who become ill, but have no spouse, children or parents to care for them,” Truitt said. “This extension to the act is a commonsense measure that will bring families together while lowering the costs of healthcare.”

Under House Bill 1713, the employer would provide up to six weeks of unpaid leave, provided the sibling, grandparent or grandchild has no living spouse, a child over 17 years of age, or a parent under 65.

Truitt’s bill has the support of the National Cervical Cancer Coalition, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, PathWays PA, and the Disability Rights Legal Center.
